Lifeguard Requirements
The primary purpose of the Lifeguarding program is to train lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water.
Prerequisites:
- Must be 15 years of age
- Complete a swim-tread-swim rely. Participants will be required to swim 150 yards using freestyle and/or breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes without using their hands or arms, then finish the relay with a 50-yard swim using freestyle and/or breaststroke without stopping.
- Complete a timed brick relay. Participants will be required to swim 20 yards, surface dive at least 7 feet deep, grab a 10-pound brick, resurface, and kick on their back and return to the starting point while holding the brick on their chest. This must be done within a minute and forty seconds.
All materials included.
- Certification issued upon successful completion of the course.
- Course graduates 15 years of age and older are encouraged to apply for Y employment.
- Class times might be adjusted based on class size and ability.
Classes might cancel due to low enrollment. Refunds will be given for cancelled courses only, not for failing to pass the prerequisite swim test or online portion of course.
Be a Leader. Be a Lifeguard.
