Dance Classes

Co-ed Ages 3+

Explore movement, build confidence, and have fun! Our Dance Program offers a positive and encouraging environment where children can develop coordination, flexibility, balance, rhythm, body awareness, and self-expression. Dancers can choose from Beginner and Intermediate Ballet, Jazz, and Combo Dance classes, making it easy to find the right fit whether they’re discovering dance for the first time, building on previous experience, or complementing their gymnastics training.

Classes are offered in sessions, with Combo Dance students also having the opportunity to participate in an optional end-of-year recital.

  • Scholarships are available.

Beginner Ballet

45 Minute Class - Once a Week

Discover the fundamentals of classical ballet while developing balance, flexibility, posture, coordination, and grace. Dancers learn basic ballet positions and terminology in a fun, supportive environment. Ballet is also an excellent complement to gymnastics, helping athletes improve body awareness, flexibility, and presentation.

Who should register:

  • Dancers new to ballet
  • Recreational gymnasts interested in improving flexibility, posture, and body control
  • Children ready to participate independently in class

Intermediate Ballet

Ages 5+ | Co-Ed

60 Minutes - Once a Week

Build on ballet fundamentals while developing greater strength, flexibility, balance, posture, and artistry. Intermediate Ballet is an excellent cross-training class for gymnasts, helping improve body alignment, extension, presentation, and movement quality.

Who should register:

  • Dancers with previous Ballet experience
  • Recreational and team gymnasts interested in improving flexibility, artistry, and body awareness
  • Students ready for more advanced ballet technique

Move, groove, and have fun! Beginner Jazz introduces dancers to upbeat music, rhythm, and energetic movement while developing coordination, flexibility, confidence, and performance skills. This class is also a great complement to gymnastics, helping athletes improve musicality, coordination, and expression.

  • Dancers new to jazz
  • Recreational gymnasts interested in expanding their skills
  • Children ready to participate independently in class

Intermediate Jazz

Perfect for dancers new to dance! This class introduces the fundamentals of ballet and jazz through music, movement, and age-appropriate technique. Dancers build coordination, balance, rhythm, flexibility, confidence, and classroom skills in a fun and encouraging environment.

Dancers enrolled in Beginner Combo Dance will have the opportunity to participate in an optional end-of-year recital.

Intermediate Combo

Ages 5+ | Co-Ed

60 Minutes - Once a Week

Continue developing ballet and jazz technique through more challenging combinations, flexibility, musicality, and performance skills. This class is ideal for dancers with previous experience and gymnasts looking to improve artistry, coordination, and confidence while enjoying a fun and supportive environment.

Dancers enrolled in Intermediate Combo Dance will have the opportunity to participate in an optional end-of-year recital.

Who should register:

  • Dancers with previous dance experience
  • Gymnasts with previous gymnastics experience looking to complement their training through dance
  • Students ready for more challenging choreography and technique

YMCA Dance Classes

What to Wear

Dancers do not need a dance leotard, however it is recommended.

  • Dancers can wear capris leggings
  • T-shirts must be tucked into legging so midriff is covered at all times
  • No jeans or pants with metal snaps
  • No bare midriffs allowed
  • Long hair should be tied back
  • No jewelry

General Information

Dancer classes and camps are held at the Wausau Branch.

  • Dancer placement is based on ability and maturity rather than age.
  • Refunds/Credits will not be issued because of inclement weather or personal schedule conflicts.
  • The YMCA reserves the right to cancel or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Jackie has been a gymnastics instructor at the Wausau Branch since 2010. Prior to becoming a gymnastic instructor, she spent several years in competitive trampoline in which she competed in Synchronized Trampoline at the World Age Group Games in Sydney Australia. One of the skills Jackie brings to the YMCA is introducing gymnastics to as many children as possible. Also, she strives to help gymnasts build not only strength, flexibility and balance, but also character, courage and confidence.
