Our competitive Woodson Y Northern Swimmers swim team provides a caring environment to develop the sport of swimming.
- The younger a swimmer starts out on our team the better.
- We have had 3 year olds on the team, the only requirement is the ability to swim 25 yards unassisted.
Our Mission
To provide opportunities for every member to reach his/her potential at each stage of their development; giving swimmers of all ages the opportunity to improve swimming skills.
WYNS
Our team is a YMCA and a USA sanctioned year-round swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities.
Emphasis is on instructing swimmers in proper competitive techniques. The goal of our team is to provide opportunities for every member to reach his/her potential at each stage of their development.
The YMCA swim team gives swimmers of all ages the chance to improve swimming skills while building friendships and healthy habits that last a lifetime. We have one team for all Y pool locations in Woodson YMCA Wausau & Aspirus YMCA Weston.

Team Structure
Our competitive team provides a supportive environment where swimmers of all ages and abilities grow in skill, confidence, and character.
WYNS is organized by age, skill level, and desired commitment. We’re a YMCA and USA Swimming-sanctioned, year-round team focused on proper technique, goal setting, and personal growth.

Starting in Novice
The Novice level offers up to two 45-minute practices per week.
Start Young! Swimmers as young as 3 years old can join—if they can swim 25 yards unassisted on both their front and back, they’re ready for WYNS!
Focus: Introduction to the fundamentals of competitive swimming.
- Learning the basics of freestyle and backstroke
- Developing body balance in the water
- Introduction to starts, flip turns, dolphin kick, and streamlining
WYNS
Starts & Turns Clinic
Join us for two specialized clinics designed to help swimmers become faster and more efficient every time they leave the block or push off the wall. Through progressive instruction, individualized feedback, and drills used at the collegiate level, swimmers will develop the skills needed to improve race execution and carry more speed through every length of the pool.
Intermediate Starts & Turns Clinic
Wednesday, August 5
4:30–6:00 PM at the Aspirus Branch Pool
Designed for swimmers with a strong competitive foundation who want to develop more consistent and efficient starts and turns. This clinic focuses on proper technique, body position, and building confidence through progressive instruction and individualized coaching. Designed for High School, Gold, Plat AG and Plat Prep level swimmers.
Limited to 15 swimmers
Advanced Starts & Turns Clinic
Thursday, August 6
4:30–6:15 PM at the Aspirus Branch Pool
Designed for experienced competitive swimmers looking to maximize the fastest parts of every race. This clinic focuses on explosive power, efficient technique, and race execution while providing individualized feedback throughout the session. Designed for Plat Prep and Senior level swimmers.
Underwater Video Analysis: This clinic will utilize an underwater camera to provide swimmers with detailed visual feedback on their technique beneath the surface.
Limited to 15 swimmers

Woodson YMCA Head Swim Team Coach
Mike McQueen has been coaching with WYNS for 8 years and is the Head Competitive Swim Coach, while primarily coaching the senior level groups. Mike is passionate about helping each swimmer reach their own highest potential.
