MEET OUR 2018 STAFF
Scruff - Camp Director
Scruff joined the Woodson YMCA Camp Sturtevant team in May of 2015 as the Leadership Camp Program Director and took over as the Camp Director in 2017. Scruff earned both his Bachelor’s degree (Media & Cinema Studies) and his Master’s degree (Recreation, Sport, and Tourism) from the University of Illinois. He also worked full-time for the University before family ties brought him and his wife to central Wisconsin where they now reside in Marathon City. In his spare time, Scruff referees WIAA and NCAA football and basketball, enjoys being outdoors, playing cards, and spending time with his wife and two kids. Have a question for Scruff? Email here.
Otter -Assistant Camp & Youth Program Director
I am greatly excited for what my second year as Assistant Camp Director with Camp Sturtevant has in store. As a Door County native, and prior Y-Camp Director, I thoroughly enjoy giving kids an opportunity to learn and grow in an outdoor setting. Summers are long and there’s no better way to spend them than at Camp, developing current and new friendships! I am a graduate of Loras College, Dubuque IA, where I studied business/economics and played four years of collegiate soccer. Go Duhawks! Aqua- Office Manager
Hello! My name is Aqua and this will be my second summer at Camp Sturtevant, but I have been working in recreation and aquatics for 15 years! When I'm not at camp I am a mom of two, a full time nursing student and work in aquatics at the downtown Y. Life for me is always full of adventure, and I know this summer will be nothing less!
Birdy -Program Director
This is my third summer at camp. I attend the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and I am both an early childhood and special education major. In my free time, I love to travel and watch Netflix. I’m looking forward to another fun summer at Camp Sturtevant!
Boa - Program Director
This will be my fifth summer at camp, I started in 2014 as a Junior Counselor for two years and then have been a Senior Counselor for the past two summers. I will be a junior in the fall at UW-Madison and am pursuing a degree in zoology with a certificate in education and educational services. After school, I hope to get a job at a zoo as a curator of education running education programs and summer camps. When I'm not at camp or stuck studying I love fishing, hiking, camping, playing basketball and just being outdoors in general. I can't wait for this summer to start and have it be the BEST one yet!
Squatch -Program Director
I've been a part of Camp Sturtevant for 13 years. I attended camp for nine years, worked as a Junior Counselor for four years and Senior Staff for the past two years. I'm attending the University of Wisconsin- Marathon County and studying business. My main hobby is weight lifting.
This is Dent’s second year at Camp Sturtevant. He studied software development at NorthCentral Technical College and now is attending UW- Stevens Point for general science, with a focus on education. In his free time he likes to play video games, paintball and sing.
Chief -Nature Program Director
Chief started working at YMCA Camp Adventure in Mosinee five years ago, as a camp manager and counselor. He split his time between Camp Adventure and Camp Sturtevant the following year and then became our nature director/counselor at Camp Sturtevant, a role he currently fills. During the school year, he substitute teaches in the Mosinee and Wausau School districts as well as several parochial schools. Before that, he had taught school fulltime since 1984, had been an administrator, and worked with at-risk teens in a wilderness therapy setting. Prior to college, Chief served in the US Marine Corps working in aircrew survival. He has continued to build on this survival training and enjoys historical reenacting as a hobby. Other hobbies include playing harmonica and drums, martial arts, all outdoor activities and reading histories.
Crawfish – JC/Camp Store Program Director
Crawfish was a Junior Counselor at camp for two years and last summer had the opportunity to come back as the Junior Counselor Coordinator, which she is very happy and excited to be returning to this summer! She just graduated from DC Everest High School and looks forward to attending UW-Eau Claire in the fall where she will pursue a degree in education to work with kids some day. When Crawfish isn’t working or going to school she enjoys spending time at her family cabin and hanging out with friends.
I have been with Camp Sturtevant since 2001. I was a camper for several years and then moved up to a Junior Counselor for three more. The following year I was hired as one of the grounds maintenance workers. I have been grounds maintenance at camp for seven years and am excited to be back for another season. I am currently enrolled in the Urban Forestry Technician program at Mid-State Technical College. I enjoy my studies and intend to work as an arborist following graduation. In my free time, I enjoy hunting and being outdoors.
My name is Snare and you can catch me cleaning up around camp as maintenance staff this year. I was a camper for eight years and I couldn’t get enough so I came back as a Junior Counselor for two years and this is my second year working in maintenance, 12 years under the belt at Camp Sturtevant! I enjoy playing all kinds of sports, and I love music. I play the drums and the banjo and I can’t wait to see you in summer!
Biff- Mosinee Program Director
This will be my first year working as a counselor, and I am super excited to be doing so. I recently graduated from high school and will be attending Marquette University this fall. I love being active and playing sports. Some of my favorite hobbies are playing soccer and ultimate frisbee. I remember going to Camp Sturtevant when I was younger, and I can’t wait to work there this summer!
This is my first summer at camp as a counselor and I’m beyond excited! I just graduated from Wausau East and I’m attending the University of MN Twin Cities in the fall to major in nursing and minor in Spanish. In my free time, I like to be outside, watch sporting events, and spending time with friends and family. I am looking forward to a great summer.
I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and recently graduated from Lake Superior State University with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and will continue my masters at Grand Valley State University in the fall. A lot of my family resides in Wausau, so I'm excited to spend the summer with extended family and enjoying a new adventure at camp!
This will be my first year as a counselor at Camp Sturtevant. I just graduated from Wausau East High School and will be attending The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire this fall for athletic training. In my free time, I love going on adventures, spending time with my friends, and playing soccer. I can’t wait for a summer full of adventures and lasting memories!
This is Jaws’ second summer at Camp Sturtevant! She was a camper for eight years and spent a year at Camp Sturtevant as a junior counselor. Jaws returned as a Junior Counselor last summer to help out at the resident camp, Camp Jorn. She has recently graduated from Wausau East High School and will be attending UW-Eau Claire in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing or elementary education. In her free time, Jaws likes to read, play soccer and spend time with relatives up north!
Krispy was a camper at Sturtevant for three years, and has returned from his hiatus to join the ranks of the counselors. He is glad to be working with such a kind group of fellow counselors to give a great summer season for the incoming campers. Having just graduated from the halls of Wausau West High, Krispy is looking forward to going to UWSP to pursue a degree in education and acting. Krispy enjoys occupying the stage, reading books and listening to music, or hanging with friends old and new.
Laminator aka Lam has been hanging around Camp Sturtevant since 2006 working her way through the ranks as a camper, junior counselor, and counselor! She is thrilled to get to spend another summer at her “favorite place in the world” and pumped to sing camp songs and make friendship bracelets. As new graduate of DC Everest Lam is excited to attend UW - Eau Claire in the fall to study Instrumental Music Education. When Lam is not at camp she enjoys going on adventures, drinking coffee, spending time with friends, and playing in community bands.
I started my camp experience here at Sturtevant when I was nine and stayed as a camper until I was able to become a Junior Counselor. I was a Junior Counselor for two summers, took a break from camp for the next two years, and then joined again as a counselor halfway through last summer. This is going to be my second summer working as a counselor here at Camp Sturtevant. I'm going to be a sophomore at UW Madison this year, and I'm currently planning to obtain a degree in computer sciences and/or neuroscience. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis with my friends and being outdoors whenever possible. I look forward to another great summer at camp!
Narwhal - Counselor
This will be my fourteenth summer at camp and my second as a counselor. I just completed my freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and my major is still undecided. When I’m not at school or at camp I love kayaking, reading, camping, and watching movies. I’m looking forward to having another great year at camp!
This is going to be Scribbles’ first year at camp Sturtevant as a counselor, but he went to camp Sturtevant for four years as a camper. In his free time, Scribbles loves to make music, whether with his guitar, trombone, or just his voice. Scribbles can also be found maintaining, upgrading, and building computers in his free time. In the fall, Scribbles will be attending UW-Madison to possibly major in computer science.
This will be my first year at camp, and I can’t be more excited! Currently, I’m attending the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee to major in Dance and minor in Film Production. When I’m not at camp, I love to read, hike, help out at my dance studio, watch movies, and go camping. I’m looking forward to a summer full of fun and adventure!
I am super excited for my second summer at camp as a counselor! I will be a junior next fall at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and am majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Mathematics. Some things I love to do are hammocking, adventure different areas (my favorite being the bluffs in La Crosse), taking pictures, learning new hobbies, and enjoying life!
Tide - Counselor
Hi! My name is Tide and this is my fourth summer as a senior counselor at Camp Sturtevant. I am a senior at UW La Crosse pursuing a degree in English Education and Spanish. When I’m not at camp, I also serve for AmeriCorps through the North Central Community Action Program. For that reason, you might not see me around camp for a few weeks! However, when you do see me, I will probably be playing on the beach with the pioneers or pushing campers on the swings at Outpost! In my free time, I love to hike, bike, and spend time outdoors. I can’t wait to meet you all and spend another summer at Camp Sturtevant!
Tootsie - Counselor
I am very eager for my first summer working at Woodson’s YMCA Camp Sturtevant as a camp counselor. I attend Marquette University and am majoring in elementary education and sociology. During my free time, I enjoy being outside and playing sports, in particular running, basketball, and water skiing! I am looking forward to this summer spending time with kids and exploring new adventures with them!
Tornado - Counselor
Tornado is entering his second summer at camp. He is currently enrolled at UW- Stevens Point where he is majoring in Natural Science and has the intent to teach Secondary Education. He currently works at a customer care center for Associated Bank. This fall, Tornado will be student teaching at Rosholt High School, prior to his graduation in December. His hobbies include sports (basketball, frisbee golf, tennis, golf, working out, video games, and reading.
Wave - Counselor
With six years of experience volunteering and working at another YMCA camp, she's ready and excited to spend her first summer at Sturtevant doing some of her most favorite things: boating, archery, and helping campers make memories they'll never forget.
