Theresa O’Leary grew up active but wasn’t really accustomed to using exercise equipment until a friend asked her to join a workout at a gym, in her 20s.
She has stayed active, as a Woodson YMCA member with her husband Dan, for more than 30 years.
Theresa said she remembers taking strength and step aerobics classes in the old Wausau Branch South Gym without the benefit of air conditioning!
She joined the Y when she was employed at a company directly across the street from the Wausau Branch and started spending lunch hours attending a fitness class or coming to exercise after work.
“It was a good place to meet people,” said Theresa.
These days, Theresa noted, it’s probably more of the social component that keeps her coming just about every week day.
“It’s my draw to get out of the house,” she said.
The Wausau woman, 59, has started playing pickleball over the past year. She said she watched members playing while walking on the track and decided to give it a try.
It’s a sport that she now enjoys for the fitness and camaraderie.
