 General Function

The student intern, under the supervision of a Program Director, will assist in carrying out YMCA policies and procedures.  The intern will experience the day-to-day responsibilities of a YMCA Program Director.  Each internship will be tailored to fit both the intern and the Woodson YMCA’s needs.

 Qualifications

The student intern should be in the final year of under-graduate studies in Wellness / Health Promotions, Physical Education, Fitness Recreation, or a related field of study.

Guidelines
 

• Length of Internship:  Varies on college requirements for individual interns.
• Hours / week:  40  (Determined by supervisor on weekly basis)
• Project:  Intern will be required to develop a program or event of their choice with guidance from Program Director.
• Intern will attend staff, committee and Board meetings.
• Building and tour coverage will be assigned to intern.
• Application:  Student must send resume and cover letter to Associate Executive Director.  An interview process will take place from there.
• Wage compensation available for portion of 40 hour schedule.
   

Areas of Learning

 Aquatics:    

• swimming lessons (preschool through adult)
• schedule guards/instructors
• competitive swim team
• conduct in-services

Fitness:

• strength training orientations
• aerobic classes (learn / possibly teach)
• cycling (learn / possibly teach)
• fitness evaluation and testing
• hi-tech equipment orientation
• health fairs
• special events (triathlons, running races, new year’s resolution solution)

Gymnastics:

• teach classes (preschool, developmental, recreational)
• competitive team
• schedule / evaluate
• plan programming

 Youth & Adult Sports:

• league set-up (basketball, flag football, soccer)
• camps (basketball, flag football)
• classes (baseball, kinder sports)
• climbing wall
• special events (3X3 tournaments, baseball clinics)
• home-school P.E.

Miscellaneous Areas:

• membership drives
• tours
• building coverage
• budgeting
